Hello, Kardinal Ratz suggested I create blog for fans of Ell Donsaii so there would be a place they could be updated on what's happening with the next book etc.
Right now Tau Ceti (an Ell Donsaii story #6) is being proofread by some friends to try to cut down on the typos. Hopefully it will be up on Amazon and Smashwords sometime next week.
Though I have more ideas for Ell Donsaii stories, I think I'm going to try something different for the next book, still trying to figure out exactly what though.
Tau Ceti (an Ell Donsaii story #6) came out just before Christmas.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm working on a non Ell Donsaii book about a man who is a physics genius but absolutely awful in social situations. His wife and two kids have no idea how successful he's been at inventing devices for the energy sector, because he doesn't really realize it himself and wouldn't think it was a big deal anyway. He's been fired from his job as a researcher just as one of his experiments melted down, releasing far more energy than he'd put into it! If he can understand what happened and patent that phenomenon, he won't need the job anyway.
The new book is out on Amazon and Smashwords (well, I put it up, could take a couple hours to actually be available.
ReplyDelete“Vaz” is the story of Vaz Gettnor, a socially impaired, yet scientifically brilliant man. Despite his inability to relate to others, Lisanne married him in admiration for what she perceived as shy intelligence. However, she’s been disappointed by the way he’s settled for working as no more than a glorified lab tech with a low salary. Adding to their problems, Vaz and Lisanne have two teenagers who are typically surly, embarrassed by their parents, but whom they want to send to college—if only they can find the money. When Vaz is fired from his job as a researcher, but then discovers a means to achieve “cold fusion,” a technology which could solve the energy crisis and their financial difficulties, virtually no one believes him, least of all his family. In fact, the only people who do believe are the ones who are trying to steal the technology from him...
Will be reading your new book and eagerly anticipating ell donsaii's next adventure :D
ReplyDeleteVaz is a very good read, thank you
ReplyDeleteI am looking forwards however to the continuation of the Ell Donsaii series, book 6 leaves so much open
Habitats (an Ell Donsaii story #7) is now available on Amazon and on Smashwords. Hope you like it!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/Habitats-Ell-Donsaii-story-ebook/dp/B00CZN6ODC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369439826&sr=8-1&keywords=dahners+habitats
Yes indeed and looking forwards to number 8 and more
ReplyDeleteAllotropes (an Ell Donsaii story #8) is now available. Hoping you enjoy!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EW8UQHS
number 8 just as great as the rest... which means it was ******* awesome... pretty much my favorite book series
ReplyDeleteThe Ell Donsaii series ranks among the best scifi I've ever read. Very few authors deal with such a broad spectrum of issues in a fast paced fun and challenging scientific setting. I dearly love humility, despots in academia, political cronyism, issues real women face, and kindness in the face of evil being iintertwined with breathtakingly human moments surrounded by incredibly fun science!
ReplyDeleteDefiant (an Ell Donsaii story #9) is now available on Amazon.
ReplyDeleteYou can enter ASIN: B00GVHUCRC on Amazon to find it.
Hope you enjoy it as much as the others.
Or this will take you directly to it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/Defiant-Ell-Donsaii-story-9-ebook/dp/B00GVHUCRC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385249537&sr=8-1&keywords=defiant+dahners
Hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteHave really enjoyed your Ell Donsaii series. Am looking forward to #10.
ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed the series so far any idea when #10 will be available?
ReplyDelete1-2 more months, glad you like them!
ReplyDeleteYESS!
ReplyDeleteBy the way: Can you get "Quicker" somewhere without DRM and 0$? Want to give it to a friend of mine (with USB-stick) to get him hooked to the series
It is free on Amazon today. If he doesn't get it, email me directly at Ldahners@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi, I found and read your books in early January (they were amazing) and wondered if it will be closer to one or two months when the tenth comes out, if you don't know that's fine. Thanks for writing such great books.
ReplyDelete#10 should be out within a week. If you want to be on an email list to be notified, e-mail me at ldahners@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWanted (an Ell Donsaii story #10)
ReplyDeleteI've just put the new book up on Amazon. It can take up to 12 hours for it to appear but usually takes much less.
Hope you like it!
Laury
For those of you who would like to download the updated version of Quicker (Ell Donsaii #1) for free (or have friends who you think might like to try the first of the Ell Donsaii books free) it will be free this Saturday, February 8, 2014. You could just delete your original copy and replace it with the new one.
ReplyDeleteThank you, reading wanted as I write this.. I'm going to really enjoy the next few hours.. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOnly problem now is that I have to wait for the book 11.. Please oh please tell me there's a tentative date somewhere !
DeleteHard to know, 2-4 months depending on how much life gets in the way.
ReplyDeleteL
Thanks, as long as the date is tentative and not a year or more away, I'm happy.
DeleteThere are other series I follow as well, but with 1-2 years between books (or more)it is just plain torture.
And as I read about 300 pages an hour (and remembers most of the book) that makes it just sad. So I re-read a lot, usually series I like one time each year. And this even though I know the books well enough to describe the entire book as a storytelling..
So I absolute love a tentative date 2 to 4 months away :-D
(Currently re-reading the entire Ell Donsaii series, but at a limit of 1 book pr week, so it should hold me for about 2-3 months..And there are other books in between now and then as well *Big Grin*)
Thanks for a series I very much enjoy, (still not sure why though)
With Wanted you almost have a lightsaber style weapon, but I'm curious as to what would happen if you crossed the beams?:-)
ReplyDeleteShould just pass through one another. Also can't imagine that they would transmit force back to the user's hand like a light saber seems to.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, although its the simultaneous opening of two ports in the same space that I had in mind on the theory of exciting, canceling, or just nothing as you said.
ReplyDeleteAny plans to adapt terraforming techniques for future books?
don't really know what's going to happen in the future, keeps it interesting for me!
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about what Orinthas said about two ports opening in the same place. If two people were to use those sword type things against each other, they would most likely pass right though, since most of the time the ports would not actually be in the same spot as the other. However, if it ever happened that the two ports tried to open in the exact same place at the same time(a very low chance), my guess would be some sort of power surge that would either blast both of the people away or something that would hurt and deactivate both persons equipment.
ReplyDeleteHi I was wondering where within the 2-4 months the book may come out?
ReplyDeleteMay, June or possibly July.
I'm really looking forward to the next book. I love this series so much.
Elizabeth, I'm very glad you like the books! The next book should be out within 10 days. If any of you want to be on an email list to be notified when books come out, send me a request to do so with your email address at Ldahners@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI just put Rescue (an Ell Donsaii story #11) up on Amazon. Usually takes hours for it to show up on the website but this time it came up in about 15 minutes. You can find it at
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/Rescue-Ell-Donsaii-story-11-ebook/dp/B00K6UC3WC/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1399512537&sr=1-1&keywords=dahners+rescue
Hope you like it!
I'm thinking about taking a Donsaii break to do a TP/TK book next. Writing is kind of a hobby rather than a living for me and I think it will be fun. Some of you have given me some positive feedback on the idea. We'll see how it goes.
Also closing in on finishing the Audiobook version of "Quicker (an Ell Donsaii story #1)"
Thanks again for all your positive vibes and support!
Laury Dahners
Dang, I read to fast, I bought the book on amazon (kindle) earlier today and about 160 minutes after I started reading the book suddenly ran out of pages.. so now I'm back to waiting for the next book in the series.. ;-)
DeleteBut non the less, thanks for a great book.. and please do not take this the wrong way, but don't take a too long break if you decides to take a break.
I also just finished the book. It made me wonder why gravity does not seem to go through the ports. It is just a force like any other it you can pull on a wire through the port than gravity should be act though one as well. If gravity does go though ports it would be an interesting way to have artificial gravity in space or on Mars. You can just have a lot of small ports under a plate of some kind or in a graphene balloon. It would be to expensive to put under the farming field but you could have it like that in common rooms or exercise rooms. It would be cheaper if you find a way to have them in Jupiter because you would not need to have as many ports to have Earth-like gravity. The sun would be even better but the heat would cause problems. Maybe a few from the sun and more from Jupiter to cancel each other out heat wise.
DeleteHi I was just wondering how close you are to publishing another book either TP/TK or ell donasii as I'm sure I'll enjoy either?
ReplyDeleteHi there gentle readers.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who've been waiting on another book, I've just put Telekinetic (a Hyllis family story #1) up on Amazon.
“Telekinetic” is the first of a series of stories featuring the Hyllis family who tend to inherit telekinetic “talents.” The story is set after a plague induced apocalypse. The resulting collapse of civilization has reduced mankind back to iron and horsepower.
Tarc Hyllis’s mother (and his grandfather before her) could “feel” things with their talent. They became healers because they can feel inside their patients, which frequently let them diagnose the underlying causes of an illness. Having made a diagnosis, unfortunately, there is often little they can do to treat the problem.
Tarc’s father can “push” objects with his mind, but because he can’t feel inside of anything, he doesn’t know where to exert force in order to help to treat his wife’s patients.
Tarc is just gaining the ability to do both of these things. The combination of these two powers will let him both diagnose a physical problem such as bleeding and then stop that bleeding by applying pressure inside the patient. This is a very exciting development for his mother, who too often has had to watch her patients die for lack of effective treatment.
Then some strangers show up to scout the town where the Hyllises live. They plan and initiate a violent takeover. Can Tarc’s powers, weak as they are, play a role in resisting this invasion?
Never fear Donsaii fans, I'm planning another of her stories next.
Laury Dahners
By the way, for those of you who like Audiobooks, Quicker (the first of the Ell Donsaii books) is now available as an audiobook on ACX.com and on Amazon.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed Telekinetic (it was the first of of your storied that I read), and went on to read all the others - all of them great but I actually enjoyed Telekinetic, the most. So looking forward to more Hyliss family books as well as Eli Bonsaii.
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing them!
Thanks Simon. I'm working on another Ell book right now, but after that planning another Hyllis story.
ReplyDeleteLaury
Is there a probable release date available (narrowed down to month or so)?
DeleteProbably sometime in late september or early October
ReplyDeleteHey, Impact! (an Ell Donsaii story #12) is going up on Amazon. Should be available in just a few hours based on their usual time to roll it out.
ReplyDeleteLaury Dahners
For those of you who liked Telekinetic-
ReplyDeleteI've just put Teleporter (a Hyllis family story #2) up on Amazon.
Usually takes a few hours for it to show up on Amazon.com.
Hope you like it!
Laury Dahners
Cannot wait for the next installments of both Donsaii and Hyllis Family.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you interested in Tiona, the sequel to Vaz, it's up.

Thank you for your stories I have really enjoyed them and tend to finish them in one go because I can't wait to read what happens next. I have just finished rereading the Ell Donsaii books and even knowing what happens next I couldn't put them down to do the house work :-)
ReplyDeleteI was just hoping that you can give a ballpark release date for the next book in the series. In the mean time I am off to read Tiona.
Thank you again for the great books.
Not sure about the next Ell book. Waiting to be struck by some Ellspiration. Probably write another Hyllis family book next, have some good ideas for that already.
ReplyDeleteLaury Dahners.
Thank you for the update. I look forward to another Hyllis story. Tiona was as good as I hoped and yet again I am behind on my housework :-)
DeleteLaury, just finished the Ell series - thanks so much for hours of enjoyment. This will be one of my re-read series. Hoping to learn more about Zage in the future. Now will go post some great Amazon reviews and get your other books.....thanks again
ReplyDeleteCheryl,
ReplyDeleteThanks!
If any of you would like to be on an email list to be notified when the next book comes out, just send me an email at ldahners@gmail.com

This is offshoot from something that's currently going on your Amazon blog (if you can call a blog), though it's more of crowd source whine that I decided today to turn off.
ReplyDeleteI would invite you to read Christopher Nuttall's blog 'About' page on Wordpress:
https://chrishanger.wordpress.com/about/
It's pretty short, and cut and dried about this issue of ownership.
I love it, simply because I'm free to offer thoughts, ideas, and criticisms, without the author worrying about a lawsuit from me.
Why do I ask this?
Your blog here is not compartmentalized enough to really post discussions about a particular series or book. I know you're a busy man and this is just a hobby, but really I would like to help or just listen. After all, I have a hobby of reading Sci-Fi books. :)
I think they worry too much.
ReplyDeleteYou might look at - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright
Relevant quote is
"Copyright does not cover ideas and information themselves, only the form or manner in which they are expressed.[20] For example, the copyright to a Mickey Mouse cartoon restricts others from making copies of the cartoon or creating derivative works based on Disney's particular anthropomorphic mouse, but does not prohibit the creation of other works about anthropomorphic mice in general, so long as they are different enough to not be judged copies of Disney's.[20]"
So, go ahead and suggest that Ell build a slipinsheid nukarator on Sirius. The suggestion doesn't mean that I'll be able to come up with a story about nukarators, but I'd enjoy hearing about it. If I do write a nukarator story, by the time I get around to it, it will have morphed into something different than the suggestion (I often start out to write one story and find out it goes somewhere completely different - keeps it fun for me). It would certainly be different enough that it wouldn't violate a copyright.
Laury
I was just wondering what happened to Ell's painting that she bought in Italy?
ReplyDeleteRensic, good thought, I'll have to come back to it next book.
ReplyDeleteLaury
Have just put "Healers, a Hyllis family story #3" up, but can take minutes to days for it to show up on Amazon. Usually just a couple of hours. Hope you like it!
ReplyDeleteLaury Dahners
Great reading while I've been recovering from a ruptured eardrum. Thank you :-)
ReplyDeleteHow does Ell pronounce her last name?
ReplyDeleteCarrick,
DeleteIn my mind she pronounces it Dawn-sigh.
Laury
Aha! I sort of figured Dawn-sah-EE-ee, like her family was Finnish or some other odd language. I really enjoy the books, and the healers and all the others. Thanks for them.
ReplyDeleteCarrick, Pronounce them how you like in your own mind. Glad you like the books!
ReplyDeleteLaury
Next book please!!
ReplyDeleteShould be in the next 3-4 weeks.
ReplyDeleteLaury
Excellent!! Thankyou!
DeleteYiphee! Can't wait to read it. Love all your previous books.
DeleteFor those of you who are interested, I've put up the next book in the Vaz/Tiona series up on Amazon so you can "preorder" it if you want it as soon as it comes out (Aug 28).

Just finished Disc I could not put it down
ReplyDeleteDo you have plans for a sequel to bonesetter?
ReplyDeleteDahaku,
ReplyDeleteI think so. I'm doing a book of short stories which should be out soon. Then I think I'll write a Bonesetter sequel.
Glad you like them!
Laury Dahners
Thanks! I grew up trapping and served in the navy as a hospital corpsman attatched to the Marines so I relate. I found bonesetter fascinating!
ReplyDeleteHi, Just letting you know that "Six Bits" a collection of short stories is available for preorder on Amazon now.
ReplyDeleteWarning!
This book is a compilation of short stories, novelettes, and novellas. Two of them, Porter and Macos have been available on Amazon as stand-alone stories in the past, but readers complained that they were too short to justify Amazon’s minimum $0.99 price. Thus, I have removed Porter and Macos from Amazon, extensively rewritten them and then compiled them with some other short stories to provide a better value. If you have already purchased and read Porter and Macos when they were available as stand-alone stories you may be disappointed, but the price for all six stories is still just $0.99.
It consists of six stories.
1. Sander (Novelette) – a story about growing up in the asteroid belt and encountering a man who is a complex mixture of both good and evil
2. Exceltor (Novella) – a story considering how warfare might work in a future where wormholes allow sudden bridging of large distances in space
3. Macos (Short Story) – a coming of age story wherein a young man finds his father is a completely different man than he had always imagined
4. Porter (Novelette) – a young girl can open small portals from one location to another with her mind but—to her father’s great disappointment—she just wants to be a musician
5. Billy Benoit (Novelette) – a man who thinks it would be awesome to go back in time, finds out it isn’t as cool as he’d hoped – at all…
6. Guitar Girl (Short Story) – a cover band at a beach bar invites a pretty girl with a guitar to play a set with them – having no idea who she really is…

ReplyDeleteany thoughts about when the next donsaii book will be released?
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm working on another Bonesetter. Perhaps I'll work on a Donsaii when that's finished?
ReplyDeleteLaury Dahners
Looking forward to both of them!
ReplyDeleteyou write 'em I'll read 'em
Really looking forward to the next Donsaii book.
ReplyDeleteI just love the Donsaii series. The Vaz and Tiona books are awesome, too.
Haven't read the Bonesetter books. Maybe i should try them.
I mean... I did like all the other ones.
I've read the synopsis but was put off by the cavemen setting.
We'll see.
I really hope there will be a Donsaii book after the next Bonesetter book.
As long as you have awesome new ideas.
I'm really curious about the next invention and Zage's biology career.
And what happens with Sigma Draconis.
And with Ell's A.I. (seems like it's starting to become self aware [would be really cool if he will get a body an become an android])
The series has just so much potentioal.
And so much ways to continue.
Anyway...
Keep up the good work.
Looking forward to your future books.
McMe,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words. Ell should be the next book after this Bonesetter I'm working on.
Laury
HI Laurence - I have read and enjoyed both the Ell Donsaii and the Hyllis family stories - am very curious to see how the Hyllis story develops! The post apocalyptic setting is always interesting, and the "what if" nature of each story is very entertaining. keep up the great storytelling!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement!
ReplyDeleteLaury
Here's hopeing you had a great Thanksgiving and plenty of time to write!
ReplyDeleteI'm rereading the Ell Donsaii series. I'm homebound due to the lingering effects of a stroke and your books continue to give me many hours of pleasure. Thank you!
Thanks! Hope you get better soon!
ReplyDeleteLaury Dahners
I was wondering if you give and update on when your next stories will be out. I have all of your existing fiction.
ReplyDeleteI know there will be a Bonesetter followed by a Donsai but it was timeframes that interested me. I really enjoy your work but have missed Eli...
ReplyDeleteMany thanks
Pretty hard to know. I just write until the story seems done - no deadlines or anything. I would estimate late december or early january for bonesetter2, 3-4 months after than for another Donsaii?
ReplyDeleteLaury
Bonesetter 2 -winter- is out

3AM here in Alaska just finished Bonsetter2 Winter
ReplyDeleteSuperb!!
I too really enjoyed the latest Bonesetter. Thanks for helping to feed my reading addiction. In a future episode you could introduce the use of the atlatl (or have I missed something and they are already using it?). Anyway love the combination of science and history in this series.....
ReplyDeleteSorry to be impatiant--no, no,i'm not! Next book please...
ReplyDeleteWorking on a Donsaii book at present, hopefully you'll like it.
DeleteLaury Dahners
Have you got any idea how long the next book will be?
ReplyDeleteAbout the same length as the others. Unless you're asking when it will come out? Then I'm not sure, probably 1-2 months. If you'd like to be on my email list for when new books come out, send me an email at ldahners@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your interest,
Laury Dahners
What will the title of the book be? And is the donsaii the only one about done ? I'm greedy I like all your series, but love donsaii and vaz
ReplyDeleteI usually name the books after they're written and I know what they're about (its an adventure for me too). I only write one at a time so Donsaii 13 is the only one in the pipe at present. Glad you like them!
ReplyDeleteI got your email and will put you on my list to be emailed when new books come out.

Found Vaz and Tiona on audible
ReplyDeleteDahaku, that's correct.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who like audiobooks,
Vaz, Tiona and Disc, along with Quicker, have all been narrated ( the Vaz series through Tantor Media) and are out on Audible/Amazon as CDs or download to app.

Next print book?
ReplyDeleteNot sure, at least several weeks.
ReplyDeleteLaury Dahners
Thank you sir
DeleteLaurence, will the subsequent Ell Donsaii books be available on Audible?
ReplyDeleteFor those waiting for a new book, "DNA (an Ell Donsaii story #13)"

Hope you like it!
Laury Dahners
Ordered... and with time to spare so that I can reread the entire series before the release date.. (I just need to finish the other 8 books I'm currently reading first)..
DeleteWhat do you think you'll be working on next?
Deletenot sure yet
ReplyDeleteyou should do what baen does and offer books that are on pre-order for a premium of like 15 dollars and let die hards have an option of paying more for an early release. I know if e-arcs for baen but i would pay a premium to buy when prerelease is up even to get it a day early.
ReplyDeleteHah! Rather have the happy readers than the money, but thanks for the suggestion!
ReplyDeleteLaury
Some of us reader wait patiently hoping the books from our favorite authors and sit on Amazon hitting refresh for authors that do not have pre orders or a mailing list. I just found this page and was very pleased to be able to find out more about your books. Have read all of them multiple times and right now you're one of my favorite authors. You and Mackey Chandler are on the top 10 :)
ReplyDeleteJames,
ReplyDeleteIf you (or anyone else) would like to be on my emailing list for new books, send me a message at ldahners@gmail.com and I'll put you on it.
Laury
Sent you an email asking to be added to mailing list :)
ReplyDeleteLove the new book...
ReplyDeleteBut dang I read too fast, it's either that or the books are to short.. For I have already finished Ell Donsaii 13: DNA. I pre-ordered it on Amazon. It became available 06.38 local time (Norway) and I just finished reading it shortly before 10.00 local.
And in that time I've had several breaks, pauses (including morning ritual in the bathroom) and a meal as well.. So more please <3
Thanks for å great book, I just wish there where more like this available that I haven't already read (And I simply can't find any anymore).
I love this starting to get out into space vibe in an urban sci-setting and with really smart main character that also has an added edge (An edge as a DNA mutation, supernatural power, superpower, alien tinkering etc). I Need tips for more !!!
I love this plot and genre mix so much that I have started writing my own spin on the concept.
Thanks for a great book. And now I hunger for more...
Jorgen,
ReplyDeleteVery glad you liked the book! If you'd like author suggestions, you might try this Amazon Forum I've put a link for below. People who like the Donsaii books frequently list other authors they like on the forum there, so you could go back through it looking for such posts.

I liked the book. However I can't help but feel that it's kind of incomplete. Expect for the kidnaping attempt (which in my opinion You focused on a bit too much considering similar situations happened so many times already; I think all it deserves is a few paragraphs as a side story) other parts lack real closure. We only got to see a potential of the new ideas and technology but no real confirmed success or failure like in the other books.
ReplyDeleteI think part of the problem is that there is too many main story threads. You just don't have enough space to explore each of them properly.
E.g. I would like to see more alien pov (we don't really don't know that much about them). To see start of friendly relationship with aliens or deeming them too dangerous. To see Zage actually lose weight and possibly spread the cure (medication). To see succesful dna modification of at least one type.
Overall I enjoyed all the stories but I feel like the next book should be called "dna part 2" and bring all these stories to completion.
Sorry if I am all over the place. I am not that good at expressing myself. Not to mention english is not my native language.
Still thanks for the new story. I am looking forward to any continuation.
Latest book was best so far in series for quality and pacing. I like them all but this one was by far the most interesting to me. I can't put my finger on what made it better except the pacing of events and the changing POV was very well handled.
ReplyDeleteJust finished DnA bit more of a cliffhanger than usual can't wait for the next in the series
ReplyDeleteJust re-read DNA and it was great! Really looking forward to the next Donsaii book. The very best thing for me was Zage's development. And the cliffhanger at the end....
ReplyDeleteCould we please have an update on what you are writing next and very approximately when it will be ready.
Love all your series.
Very many thanks
Simon, thanks for your kind words.
ReplyDeleteWorking on another Vaz at present.
Laury
I live vaz just as much as Donsaii books! They are both awesome. Have not really been into the bonesetter series but it is the only one i have issues with. Love all the books as i eagerly anticipate each one! Can't wait for new vaz :)
ReplyDeleteFirst of thank you for the amazing experience of the ell books I found them when I finished reading all the urban fantasy/ kickass female books I could find so the I came across your book 12, I decided 12 books was enough to keep me going but I came across a small problem I read them all in 4 days and now I am hooked so bad. Now your on my list of amazing female's struggling being different and although i would like to harrass you for more, i will be good and just wait impatiently for more
ReplyDeleteLaury, thanks for all your series. Ell Donsaii, The Hyliss Familt, Vaz, and all the stories in Six Bits, (even if I'd bought two of them before!) Looking forward to the next Vaz book, then more about Zage, Ell and Shan. Happily waiting, (and rereading) until I can send you more money. ;)
ReplyDeleteMichael, Thanks, glad you like the books. The new Vaz should be out in a few weeks. If you want to be on my email list to be notified when new books come out, just email me at ldahners@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHello. How goes the progress on new Vaz book? Is it getting near completion?

ReplyDeleteHi Laury, I just finished the first Ell Donsaii book, Quicker. I enjoyed reading it and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I found it interesting that Ell's abilities are based simply on her Myelinated nerve axons and fast-twitch muscle fibers. I also found it interesting how you describe how these peculiarities come into play during Ell's various adventures.
As a 30+ year police officer and firearms instructor I just can't help it that I have to point out a tiny discrepancy in Ell's understanding of handgun operation. It probably doesn't matter to any of your readers but, like I said, I just can't help but to point it out so that you can correct her misunderstanding.
Twice, Ell ascribed a missed shot to the "kick" of the Beretta, saying that the "kick" caused the shot to miss the target. The "kick" is the recoil that is caused by the round exploding in the chamber of the weapon and propelling the bullet forward through the muzzle. (Newton's 3rd Law) By the time the recoil occurs, the projectile has already left the muzzle of the weapon and therefore, the recoil has no effect on the trajectory of the bullet. The only way recoil can effect the accuracy of the shot is when the shooter anticipates the recoil and tries to compensate by "pushing" the weapon just prior to the shot. So, while there are many things that effect accuracy (ie: breathing, trigger control, sight-alignment, distance to target, wind, etc.) recoil is not one of them.
There, now that I got that off my chest I can return to my reading and enjoy Ell's adventures as well as one or two of your other books. I just may be your newest fan.
Hah!
ReplyDeleteRalph,
I spent quite a bit of time researching this because it just didn't make sense to me. By the laws of physics, when the bullet begins moving there has to be some simultaneous "equal and opposite reaction," and if the barrel is not coaxial with its mount (the hand gripping the weapon) the reaction has to cause a rotation. However the bullet motion is only a small part of recoil, the much bigger part of it comes from the exhaust of the gas out of the end of the nozzle (a rocket!) and that doesn't happen until the bullet has left the barrel. By searching for the best example of my point (a small light weapon with a short barrel) I found this example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIqnvdQn5NM&list=PL4842AC9A702314D0&index=7 where you can see the barrel lifting a tiny bit (you have to hold a paper on the screen along the top edge of the barrel to be able to see it happen) before the bullet leaves the barrel (9-10 seconds into the video). However, you're right, in larger weapons (plenty of slo mo videos of them out there too) it doesn't have much effect and even in this one it's very small.
So, I changed the part that bugged you to say, "Not only did she know the location of the safety, but she also had intimate knowledge of its kick because the kick had made her miss her second shot at a tire." i.e. that the kick surprised her by moving the barrel when she took the second shot, but after that presumably she pulled the barrel back down.
Thanks for taking the time to point it out!

Just a thought on recoil. I think we're used to thinking that the recoil doesn't affect the shot in modern guns. I think the point is that it doesn't affect it much because of the speed of the bullet. Older black powder guns required lots of "follow through" on the shot (staying on the aiming point). Spring loaded pellet guns are operated with a loose grip so that the recoil is consistent. Of course with heavy loads and big bullets, the shot is often affected by peoples psychological flinch in anticipation of a heavy recoil :-)

ReplyDeleteSorry to tell you that I don't know. Waiting for inspiration to strike about Ell. Writing a book about a girl who can make herself invisible at present.
Laury Dahners
Is that a new series or part of ....

ReplyDeleteGlad to hear your working on what sounds like either a new series or standalone book. Can't wait to read anything your write :)
ReplyDeletei think the book after DNA should be about how they took over thier planet with wars and converted their makers and somehow point to where they now are, zage starts to lose to much and ELL saves him by working with him to use DNA self fixing she picked up in the DNA planet. Then Ell gets pregnant with a Girl or twins and starts to show signs of telekinesis
ReplyDeleteHi was just curious as to what you are working on now? And how far along are you in writing your next ebook? And are there any snippets you can put up?
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who are interested, The Girl They Couldn’t See (Blind Spot #1) is available for pre-order on Amazon
ReplyDeletehttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N8TOMOI?ref_=pe_2427780_160035660
This story's about Roni Buchry, a young multiracial girl with dark skin but blue eyes. She faces discrimination in her school and her family’s retail business is plagued by an organized crime family that collects “insurance,” often brutally.
Roni’s always been extraordinarily good at hiding, first in hide-and-seek as a child and later to avoid embarrassment. Now, older, she and her brother begin to realize that what she actually has is a form of telepathy. She can’t read other people’s minds, or speak to them silently, or force her thoughts on theirs. All she can do is make other people “not notice” her. At first being able to become invisible seems like a great way to hide from or avoid her old boyfriend, but she slowly begins to realize that it will let her do so much more.
She even begins to wonder if she might be able to do something about the mob family that’s been holding her city in its thrall.
If you decide to get it, I hope you like it!

DeleteBought it before work. Reading it now. Started on bus on way home from work. Very good so far :)
ReplyDeleteFinished it today! Was great. Put up a review through kindle app on my android device. Hope to see more and wish you will make this into a series :) Had what felt like a slow start but the ending was great.
ReplyDeleteR u planning on making most recent book a series? Or is it just a one off? Or are you waiting to see how it sells first?
ReplyDeleteExpecting it to be a series as long as I stay interested in it and have ideas for where it should go.
ReplyDeleteBut I'll probably write a few others before I come back to it - keeps me interested.
Laury Dahners
Are you planning on another Hyllis book anytime soon?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking I'll write another someday, but I don't have plans to do it at present. I really don't plan these things out, I just finish a book and then think about what I'd like to write next. Mostly a hobby for me and I do what I want rather than what pays.
ReplyDeleteLaury Dahners
What are you working on now?
DeleteI have read every book you have published through Kindle. All are awesome. I can't wait for the next installments of all these series. Bonesetter and Hylis are my favorite. With Donsaii as a close third. Lol
ReplyDeleteNext book will be in a new series I am tentatively titling the "Proton Field" series about a discovery of a field that attracts protons that don't have a neutron attached (i.e. hydrogen only). I'm excited about it because it has the potential to do a lot of surprising things that I think it will be fun to write stories about. Hope you'll think the stories are fun too.
ReplyDeleteSounds like another great series is being started. Can't wait and hope to see it soon!
DeleteHey, LOVE Donsaii, Bonesetter and Hylis and of course Vas - love him!. Just wondering when the donsaii books will come out on audile. I love the first one and have listened to it soooooo many times my digital copy is wearing out. PLEASE please please can you do some more on audible. I have been waiting...and waiting... Please ???x
ReplyDeleteAnother solution is to use text to speech, pick a app then find a voice u like and finally change pitch and rate till you're happy.
ReplyDeletePersonally I use Fb Reader.
For those of you who like to pre-order, the new book "Discovery (Proton Field #1)" is available to be ordered on Amazon
ReplyDeletehttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5XZNO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486499008&sr=8-1&keywords=dahners+discovery
It's the tale of Myr Sevii, a young woman who discovers a field that suppresses static electrical effects and warps space in a fashion to attract protons. It’s a hard Science Fiction exploration of what might happen if you were able to pull protons into a tiny volume and, having suppressed static repulsion, crush them together. The story examines how this new discovery affects Myr and will soon affect the world around her.
Changes abound, in the company Myr works for, in the people around her, and in her family. So many unexpected technological revolutions are happening at the same time that it’s hard for Myr and her friends to come to grips with them.
When word of the inventions gets out, vultures gather—wanting the tech for themselves.
Some of those people will kill to get what they want…
Hope you like reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Laury Dahners
Really liked Proton!!! Very well done My Dahners. Hope to see more in the new series. I pre-ordered it a couple hours before release and started reading it as soon as i was notified it was ready for download.
ReplyDeleteThanks! So glad you liked it!
ReplyDeleteLaury
Proton was great. I can see how you will perform high acceleration in the future by producing the proton field in front of the space ship. Once you turn it on and off quickly you have instantaneous gravity. Ship surrounded by water is fuel and protection from radiation. Lets get this done.
ReplyDeleteErwin
Oooh, you're reading my mind...
ReplyDeleteI am excited!!! I get you. My brain tosses and turns at night thinking of your concepts. By the way your description in proton field of Myr having a great processor and no hard drive memory is me. It was rough getting through engineering school.
DeleteErwin,
ReplyDeleteVery glad you like them! I have a crappy hard drive as well.
For you or anyone else who would like to be notified of new books when they come out - just email me at ldahners@gmail.com and I'll put you on the list.

Laury, please keep them coming. I can't wait to discuss ways to fold space by using the static suppression field in positron #3.

Hey Laury
ReplyDeleteHow's Proton Field coming along? Hope it's soon cause the anticipation is killing me. I'm also wondering if there is another Ell Donsaii planned?
Almost done writing, but then have to do a bunch of editing. Thinking Ell will be next.

Lifter (Proton Field#2)
This is the continuing tale of Myr Sevii, a young woman who discovers a field which suppresses static electrical effects and warps space in a fashion that attracts protons. In Proton Field #1, she and Vinn discovered they could fuse hydrogen. Now she’s exploring the warping of space and its effects on hydrogen containing molecules nearby. The story examines how this warping suddenly makes it possible to achieve reactionless thrust that can lift people… and move spacecraft.
In the midst of this excitement, Myr’s friend Ellen’s brother gets captured by Abu Sayyaf terrorists while on a charity mission in the Philippines. At first there doesn’t seem like there’s anything anyone can do, but gradually it becomes evident that the new technology might offer solutions for his situation as well.
Just as it seems that they might have solved Mark’s situation, Myr’s brother Connor, afflicted with muscular dystrophy, goes into heart failure. Myr had an idea for treatment of that problem too, but will she be allowed to try such a radical solution?

Got "Lifter" read it loved it. Dang I wish you were writing Michener length books. Ah well I can only hope the Ell Donsaii is coming out sooner than I am figuring...
ReplyDeleteDoug, Thanks for your kind words. If these books were a thousand pages the story arcs would be slow and rumbling (not what I like) and they'd only come out every 18 months!
ReplyDeleteI am planning another Donsaii book next, hope it turns out well.

I don't know how many of you are aware that solar energy has recently reached a "tipping point" to become cheaper than fossil fuels for making electricity in many parts of the world (sell your oil stocks!). Looks to me like solar cells and batteries are going to solve the energy/carbon/global warming crises without the need for governmental regulation.
Mr Dahners, I love your books, I am sure you have been asked this before but I have not found any definitive answer, respectfully, will there be further adventures with Ell and family?
ReplyDeleteRichard, thanks!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you like them!
I'm writing an Ell book at present. It's nearly done but I'm going to Africa for a month on a charity mission and not sure I'll be able to edit it there, so I don't know when it'll be done.

Ordered, I just hope the time passes fast for I've run out of books with the right wide for what I want. ;-)
DeleteFirst to say new book was awesome! Loved it and posted first review of book on amazon. 5 Stars and my only regret is i now have to wait for Mr Dahner to write another before i can binge read another book of his in one sitting :)
ReplyDeleteDitto on regret book was superb
DeleteAre you alreday working on something? new series or existing series such as blindspot, proton, vaz, donsaii? What can I say so looking forwssrd to another of your books
ReplyDeleteHow would you pronounce Shan's name?
ReplyDeleteHowever you want, but in my mind its first half is like the word "show" and the second half is like the word "span."
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm pretty new to your books. I read the ell donsaii books for the first time in early October and I have proton field #1, vaz #1, and telekinetic bought, downloaded, and near the top of my to-read pile. As it happened, I finished "DNA" on October 6 and decided to check when the next one is coming out. You can imagine my surprise when I when looking and found it had literally just come out. So, anyway, I'm curious what you're planning on working on next, and wondering if we'll be seeing more of Ell and Zage?
ReplyDeleteCurrently I'm working on another Blind Spot book. I'll get back to Ell and Zage, probably next summer. I feel like I need to let enough time go between them to that new ideas will percolate to the surface.
ReplyDeleteIf you, or anyone else who sees this blog, would like to be notified when new books come out, just email me at ldahners@gmail.com
Any plans for more Proton Field or Vaz books? Or will we just have to wait and see if the mood takes you in that direction in the future?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm waiting to see where the mood takes me too...
ReplyDeleteIt's a hobby, want to write what appeals to me at the time.
L
I forgot about Blindspot. I'll be reading that too as soon as i can. I'll also be sending that email. Do i need to have a specific subject title or message in the email or will anything work?
ReplyDelete"Ell Donsaii" will tell me it isn't junk
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year everyone!
ReplyDeleteI just finished Healers yesterday and it was the last one on my list of your books to read. That finishes my marathon of reading all the Vaz books, Proton Field 1 & 2, Blindspot #1, and the Hyllis books between Christmas and the New Year and I loved every single one of them! I'm looking farward to whatever you write next!
Tyson, thanks. So glad you liked them.
ReplyDeleteI'm almost done with a second Blind Spot book (few weeks of editing yet).
If any of you want to be notified when new books come out just email me at ldahners@gmail.com

Is there anything in process you are willing to tell us about? Been reading a lot of DARK "B" grade filler books. Hoping for something to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteOk Donsaii fans, how about some life for this blog and lets post our ideas for new uses for Ell's inventions or story plots? Here is what I've thought of recently. To speed up the mining operation, they make a mining robot kind of like the tunneler. It would use a graphene balloon or electromagnets to hold itself in place as it pushed the head forward, but instead of the heated head of the tunneler it would instead use a rotating face covered in hundreds of small concave ports. The ports would open and close constantly to nibble away at the material. Instead of mining from the outside in, it would worm its way to the center of the asteroid and eat from the inside out. When done, the inside of the asteroid would be mostly empty space which could then someday be used as habitats.
ReplyDeleteFor story ideas, I was wondering what kind of havok would be caused if someone purposely destroyed one of the port or PGR facilities. For example, if jets get their fuel via ports and a bad actor or even just an accident were to blow up a facility used by the airlines to provide the fuel to their fleet. This could be mostly mitigated by the planes still maintaining a reserve capacity on them, but it would still cause major traffic disruptions as hundreds of flights needed to land right away.
I’m a big time audiobook listener. I have all the books of yours that are on audible. I was just wondering if there will ever be a continuation of the Ell Donsaii series to audiobook. PS the vaz series are great I’ve been through them at least 4 times.
